Haven't we been hearing about this for quite some time now?
Personally I'm hoping for a tie-in appearance from Whitley Rackham on the next album.

| Network Maintenance - Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 04:00-05:00 GMT/UTC |
[30 Oct 2009|05:17pm] |
EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.
Thank you everyone, and a special shout out to rekoil for giving me a great suggestion AND also the opportunity to feel like I've just called in to a local radio station.
Have a great day, night or afternoon wherever you may be.
---
Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.
Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(
Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.
( tech details )
status.livejournal.org will, of course be updated before and after the maintenance window. Or else marta will get mad at me. :D

| Take the scenic route |
[28 Oct 2009|10:05am] |

Okay so HERE IS A GREAT IDEA that if it doesn't already exist, I expect will exist within the next 5 years or so.
There's two ingredients: first off, is GPS software!
Right now most GPS software offers you two choices when going from A to B: shortest distance or fastest time. They do this giving each section of road two scores: a distance score (how long you go along road X) and a speed score (how fast road X will take you: is the speed limit 40? 80?). Fancier ones use real-time traffic information to tell you how fast traffic on the road is actually moving, so you have a better speed score.
The second ingredient is photos: specifically, geotagging photos. Right now Google uses some geotagged photos to give you shots of things nearby on Google maps, since the geotag stores where on the planet the photo was taken. The problem is a lot of this tagging is done by hand. Once everyone starts buying cameras with GPSs in them, you get geotagging for free, and the number of geotagged photos will explode!
All you need to do is put these together and you've got a third score you can now add to roads: "number of photos taken on or near this road" - in other words, "scenicness". You'll be able to say "I want to go from here to school, and I want the scenic route!" and your GPS will say "How much are you willing to be delayed for some pretty scenery?" and you'll say "Oh, 10 minutes", and hey presto, an alternate route to your destination that gives you some more interesting views than you might get otherwise.
There's some wrinkles: you'd need to do some smoothing to filter out shots of accidents from the day before, say, and also filter out people who might try to grief the system, but it'll work pretty well right out of the box. Add on some content analysis (tags, say) and you might even be able to figure out what pretty scenery you should be looking for at each point, and even filter by them. It would probably work better in the country than in the city (where things like "Michael Jackson's House" will be covered in photos), but it'll still be pretty neat.
Anyway it's a pretty obvious idea but I wanted it out there in case someone tried to patent it, if they haven't already. GOOGLE/GARMIN GET ON THIS PLEASE, I WOULD LIKE TO USE THIS FEATURE

If QC were done in straight-up anime style, this is what Marigold would probably look like.

I've been carrying around my small black notebook for months now and I haven't touched it since I-don't-know-when. Today, after I left the library with more books than I anticipated I decided to spend my lunch hour in the next-door Starbucks. There was an empty seat next to a fireplace that I somehow hadn't noticed in the past few years, so I hunkered down and continued my book. The gentle bustle and rainy afternoon struck me as beautiful, and the woman sitting nearby started rocking a stroller I failed to notice - maybe the baby must have been asleep, but the point was I was oblivious. My description is again inadequate so you'll have to take my word - it was very beautiful.
I've been struck by many similar, brief moments of beauty over the last few months - looking around I'll be struck by the light coming through a window, or feel a twinge of nostalgia looking at a familiar part of my neighborhood. I quite enjoy those moments. They're affirming, in a way, and I've tried to recognize those moments when and as they come.
My list of things I want to do with my life continues unabated (and those things on the list remain largely unresolved). I need to swap in a new notebook into my bag, and I really need to start using it. I would hate to fall out of touch with my writing, and I notice that happening more and more each day now that I'm out of Fairfield. For some reason college was always a very conducive place for my writing, and being home largely the opposite. I'm not going back, so it's high time I begin reversing those sentiments.
There are a lot of things with which I have been slowly making changes, yet in the same token they leave a lot to be desired. My budgeting has been marginally improving, but I still desperately need to organize and consolidate my impending student loans. I've been running the boardwalk with my brother twice a week - quite a feat, for me, considering I'd long ago written off my ability to run in any capacity, but my diet has a lot of room for improvement, and I could really stand doing push-ups and sit-ups again.
Since I've gotten back from lunch today I've spent the afternoon looking at past journal entries over the several months, few that they are. Reading the entries there's this sense of fanaticism and mania that comes across - it's vaguely disturbing in a way - I'm thinking the desperation to mentally stay afloat amidst all the stress took it's toll on the tone of my entries. I'm not sure. It's also partly because of how little time has passed between those entries and my writing this one, today - looking at myself now and then feels like remembering myself as a crazy-ass puppy and feeling like a tired, old dog these days. The pace of my days has slowed quite a bit, since school, and I guess I've just followed suit.
Lately I've found satisfaction in planning, in hearty meals and cold weather - felt affirmed by rainy days and gleams of maturity in recollections. I've felt excitement for the work that remains to be done, acknowledgment of the fear and and uncertainty, and the willingness and resolve to carry on.

Cheap And Cheerful -- The Kills |
] |
The second episode of the fourth season of The Venture Bros. airs tonight on adultswim. Entitled "Handsome Ransom," it was the first script we wrote for this season--back when we still thought we'd be doing 13 episodes straight through and starting production immediately after pre-production of season 3 finished.
...Which also means it was written when Michael Jackson was still alive...

Too soon?
Anyway, those who were confused or annoyed by last week's convoluted premiere can relax...this one's a pretty straight forward comic ransom romp. It picks up a little while after the events of the premiere, and it's got The Monarch in it. So you won't have to think too hard and you can watch it all regular and just enjoy it and stuff.
Assuming the network actually shows both halves of it.
We Love You, JP
Kevin "Batman" Conroy guest stars in this episode, and he was a total joy to work with. A real pro who was game for whatever we threw at him and, if anything, almost got a little too into the role.
